Legislative Scholars Program: Leadership in State Government
The Legislative Scholars Program is for any student who is looking for the opportunity to participate in a Florida state legislative internship in Tallahassee. The Leadership in State Government course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental aspects and functions of Florida’s policymaking and governance structures with a specific focus on the role of the Florida Legislature. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the legislative bill-making process through various approaches, including discussions, lectures, issues research, and exposure to actual players in the political process.
In addition, the course has a strong emphasis on professional development, offering students the opportunity to develop essential skills that are crucial for success in policymaking and governance roles. Through hands-on activities such as bill summary writing, oral communication, and role-playing exercises, students will gain practical experience and develop skills in several areas: such as effective communication, thorough research, teamwork, and leadership.
Overall, this course offers a valuable combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skill development, providing students with a solid foundation for success in policymaking and governance roles in Florida.
Students who complete this program will be able to:
- Identify personal areas of growth in a professional environment that can be translated into career possibilities,
- Demonstrate awareness of legislative issues and their effects on individuals and communities,
- Engage in nonpartisan conversations and respect diverse perspectives, and
- Participate in the Spring 2024 UCF Legislative Scholars Internship

- LDR 3905 (0 or 1 credit, independent study)
- 15 Hours of service
- Biweekly seminars on Fridays
- Complete a Legislative project
- Attend 2 Impact events
- Attendance at program-specific events
